Masayuki Sakamoto (39) of V6 will take on the starring role in a production of the “Zorro” musical next year. Sakamoto has appeared in stage productions every year since 1992, but this is said to be the first time that he has earned the part through an audition.
The “Zorro” musical was first performed in London in 2008-2009, and the Japanese version will be produced by the same staff. They came to Japan this past January to hold auditions, which reportedly included many famous actors. After hearing Sakamoto’s singing, director Christopher Renshaw felt that he was perfect for the part of Zorro.
Sakamoto’s part will include scenes of flamenco, flying, and fencing. He has already started physically preparing for the role.
“Zorro” will be performed at Tokyo’s Nissay Theatre from January 13 to February 28, 2011.
